The 56@ Info Shop
56a is a volunteer-run, 100% unfunded, DIY info shop/social centre in south london. Since 1991 56a has provided a resource for local people, campaign groups and projects as well as selling radical books, music, zines and keeping an extensive archive and library. The money from this years scumfest will go to keeping the info shop alive!
Across Africa lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and intersex (LGBTI) people are struggling for their rights.
Sometimes they need to flee, come to the UK and then find themselves caught up in the nightmare world of the UK migrant detention centres.
In detention centres maybe only a few miles from where you live, there are people suffering beatings and abuse, confused, scarred and isolated, needing advice and support.
African LGBTI Asylum Seekers Network is a DIY group of African activists supporting fellow queers currently held in UK detention awaiting deportation.
Is an informal Ukrainian and Polish liberation group which was formed in January 2009. The group was initiated by a few girls from Warsaw, Wroclaw and L’viv and is still growing on both the Polish and Ukrainian sides. Gender L’viv cooperates with other organizations: WESTERN -UKRAINIAN “Women’s Perspectives” and “Total”, located in L’viv, as well as the website “homiki.pl” and an informal group “UFA” from Warsaw. The main goals of the group are acting for gender equality, and working against discrimination of sexual minorities in Ukraine.
The Gender L’viv Group organized the Manifestation and Equality RALLY in L’viv, the first ever in the history of Western Ukraine. An important aspect of the group is to promote feminist ideas in the Ukrainian language.
One of the main objectives of Gender L’viv is the creation of a centre for women. There are very few centres or organizations involved in the Ukraine in legal assistance and psychological support for people who are victims of domestic, physical, sexual or economic violence. Information about such facilities is poorly accessible to the public, especially for those living in villages. In the absence of pro-women initiatives in this city, we want to create a place where potential benefits will be reported in order to obtain legal and psychological aid. In addition, through our activities we want to build awareness that violence based on gender is a violation of human rights. It should be noted that discrimination against women in Ukraine is taking place at many levels of society. For example, one can cite the fact that over 50% of Ukrainians have a university education, but they rarely perform important functions in the country’s business. Women represent only 8.5% of parliament. In addition, Ukraine women work from 4 to 6 hours longer than men and for less pay. The average earnings of women in all employment sectors do not exceed the average earnings of men. The average salary for women is 25% lower than that for men. They are pleased however to take any work. Because of high unemployment, many young Ukrainian women go abroad in search of work. And here arises another problem namely – prostitution and trafficking.
We want the focus at this point to be people interested in themes of gender feminism, and the wider business libertarian alternative. We expect to organize meetings, workshops, lectures, film screenings, concerts, etc. This enterprise is also needed because alternative culture can’t develop in L’viv. Despite the fact that a few activists who live in the city are full of enthusiasm and willingness to act, unfortunately they can’t find places where they can meetings, concerts, etc., so can’t attract new people. For example, one of our colleagues from the group prepared a workshop on gender themes and asked the University she attends for the use of a room to hold it in, but they told her she can’t conduct such a workshop because she has no doctoral degree. We used to hold our meetings in the Om Gallery in L’viv. We managed to arrange only 3 meetings, demonstration videos and discussions on feminism then the gallery owner saw the word feminism on our poster and forbade us to meet there any longer. There were only 2 HC/Punk concerts in L’viv from November 2008 to March 2010. The reason? Lack of money to organize concerts and lack of suitable clubs that would allow us to hold such a concert (L’viv clubs do not want to organize ideological or political concerts or bands singing in Russian, or from the sharper sound). Secondly, there is a growing number of neo-Nazis and neopogan fans that come to the stadiums in L’viv. Therefore, it is necessary to create an alternative environment, which could oppose this type of xenophobic group. The important thing is that young people looking for a new environment can find an alternative place for themselves somewhere else. But where? There is no such a place, so we would like to create one.
We are planning to buy a home in L’viv and repair it, which is an initiative to gather girls and get united. Joint actions will show girls from L’viv and Ukraine and from further afield that we can do something by ourselves, without the consent of colleges, club owners, or anyone else. We realize that this goal requires a great amount of money and time. However, with collective effort we can achieve this.
